In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:207 THE CARELESS SKEPTIC THE 'PAMPHILIAN' IRONIES IN HUME'S DIALOGUES In "Hume and the Legacy of the Dialogues" E. C. Mossner sets out a widely accepted interpretation of one of Hume's major intentions in that great work. He argues that Hume's main use of irony therein is to dissimulate with respect to his true religious convictions. The purpose is to provide Hume with a defense against the expected negative (...)

  8. Minnesota Studies in the Philosophy of Science. Vol. III: Scientific Explanation, Space and Time. [REVIEW]H. K. R. - 1963 - Review of Metaphysics 16 (3):591-592.
This third volume of the Minnesota series differs from the first two in its greater emphasis on the methodology of the physical sciences. Most of the interest of these earlier volumes was directed to an analysis of the concepts of psychology, psycho-analysis, and the philosophy of mind. The concept of scientific explanation is here analyzed in successive papers by Feyerabend, Hempel, Scriven, and Brodbeck; and the problem of the status of theoretical entities in science is treated by Maxwell and Rozeboom. Scientific Explanation. [REVIEW]H. K. R. - 1971 - Review of Metaphysics 24 (4):754-755.
As the author states, this book could be read as an introductory text on scientific explanation and related topics or as a monograph which introduces some new ideas and takes a stand on these topics. Part I is strictly a textbook treatment of explanations and laws. It is clearly written and is particularly good in the classification of sorts of explanations. Part II is less successful as introductory material, but it contains some novel ideas. The author develops an approach to (...)

    Studies in the Methodology and Foundations of Science. [REVIEW]H. K. R. - 1970 - Review of Metaphysics 23 (4):749-749.
This collection contains twenty-three papers published by Suppes over the last eighteen years. For the most part they are foundational studies ranging over a wide variety of topics in the philosophy of science. The first two of four parts contain papers on methodological issues like models, measurement, probability and utility. There are two papers on models, an axiomatic treatment of extensive quantity and two papers on measurement. The six papers in Part II deal with probability theory and decision theory with (...)

    On Subcreative Sets and S-Reducibility.John T. Gill Iii & Paul H. Morris - 1974 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 39 (4):669 - 677.
Subcreative sets, introduced by Blum, are known to coincide with the effectively speedable sets. Subcreative sets are shown to be the complete sets with respect to S-reducibility, a special case of Turing reducibility. Thus a set is effectively speedable exactly when it contains the solution to the halting problem in an easily decodable form. Several characterizations of subcreative sets are given, including the solution of an open problem of Blum, and are used to locate the subcreative sets with respect to (...)

We note in Section I that an acceptable formulation of Presentism must preserve its consistency with Transient Time and inconsistency with Static Time. After arguing in Section II that certain formulations of Presentism are unacceptable, we offer in Section III a formulation of Presentism that we defend against the charge of triviality.

Right Not to Know or Duty to Know? Prenatal Screening for Polycystic Renal Disease.R. Kielstein & H. -M. Sass - 1992 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 17 (4):395-405.
New dimensions in different ethical scenarios following genetic information require new medical-ethical Action Guides for physician-patient interaction. This paper discusses the ambiguity in moral choice between a “right not to know” and “a duty to know”, regarding parental decisionmaking pro or contra selective abortion following prenatal screening for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (Potter III) and related public policy issues.

We present a one per cent measurement of the cosmic distance scale from the detections of the baryon acoustic oscillations in the clustering of galaxies from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, which is part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III. Our results come from the Data Release 11 sample, containing nearly one million galaxies and covering approximately 8500 square degrees and the redshift range 0.2 < z < 0.7. We also compare these results with those from the publicly released (...)

    Co-immune subspaces and complementation in V∞.R. Downey - 1984 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 49 (2):528 - 538.
    We examine the multiplicity of complementation amongst subspaces of V ∞ . A subspace V is a complement of a subspace W if V ∩ W = {0} and (V ∪ W) * = V ∞ . A subspace is called fully co-r.e. if it is generated by a co-r.e. subset of a recursive basis of V ∞ . We observe that every r.e. subspace has a fully co-r.e. complement. Theorem. If S is any fully co-r.e. subspace then S has (...)

    Escorial Ms. O III 2 And Related Manuscripts Of Seneca's Natural Questions.H. M. Hine - 1978 - Classical Quarterly 28 (02):296-.
Löwe and von Hartel have drawn attention to the striking similarity between R's contents and those of a lost manuscript bequeathed by Philippe d' Harcourt to the library at Bee. This manuscript is described in a twelfth-century catalogue as follows:7 ‘in alio Seneca de naturalibus questionibus et Adelermus Batensis [Adhelardus Bathonensis Becker), Proba vates, Aurea Capra, et liber Hildeberti Turonensis archiepiscopi de dissensione interioris et exterioris hominis, et sermones eius et uita ipsius.’.
